Design & Architecture
The Slow House was designed by Gunjan, a Bauhaus-trained architect who left Delhi to build something that resists the city's logic. The structure uses Vedic lime plaster and locally sourced Deodar and pine wood - materials chosen for provenance and sensory weight, not trend. Window placements are deliberate: each frame the surrounding oak and rhododendron forest as a living composition, so the landscape is never backdrop but always presence.
The interiors carry objects with travel histories: Kumari Khidki lattice panels from Nepal and Naga tribal panels from Nagaland sit alongside minimal modernist furniture. The effect is a space that holds cultural memory without performing it. A dedicated Movement Hall supports yoga, sound healing, and meditation - designed with the same spatial intention as the bedrooms.
Birdwatching at Pangot - Kilbury Bird Sanctuary
Pangot and the Kilbury forest belt rank among India's finest birding destinations. The Slow House sits directly adjacent to Kilbury Bird Sanctuary, where over 600 bird species have been recorded across the oak, rhododendron, and pine forests of the Kumaon Himalayas (per Bombay Natural History Society records and eBird India data). Species commonly sighted include the Himalayan griffon, koklass pheasant, Eurasian jay, grey-winged blackbird, and multiple species of laughingthrush and warbler. The peak birding season runs from November through April, when winter migrants arrive and skies are clear. Guided forest walks into the sanctuary can be arranged through the property. October to June is the recommended overall visiting period; monsoon months (July-September) bring lush green forests but some road closures.

Maitri - Women's Retreat at The Slow House
Maitri is a four-day retreat hosted by Gunjan for six women at a time. Rooted in yoga, sound healing, and holistic practice, it runs at The Slow House in Pangot - the forest and altitude doing as much work as the programme. Maitri is not a wellness package; it is a structured pause, designed for women who need the room to stop. Learn more at maitri.slowhousepangot.com.
About the Host
Gunjan left a Delhi design career and moved to a ridge in Pangot at 6,500 feet to build The Slow House - a villa shaped by her Bauhaus training and by years of sitting with what cities take from women. Trained in yoga, sound, and holistic healing, she now hosts Maitri, a four-day retreat for six women at a time, and writes The Unrush Collective on Substack. The villa is the argument; she is the host who keeps the room quiet enough for it.
Our Philosophy
"A sanctuary of deceleration, where the structure itself mandates a shift toward mindful inhabitation and intentionality. Every material choice, every spatial decision, every threshold crossed - they all conspire to slow the visitor down, to invite pause, to demand presence. This is architecture as meditation, form as philosophy." - Gunjan, Founder, The Slow House
